Summary
This pod examines the historical and folkloric origins of the vampire myth, and traces its evolution from the late eighteenth century to contemporary cultural productions. Students will study early vampire texts and how they relate to modern representations of the vampire. Theories associated with the Gothic, adaptation, gender and sexuality will provide frameworks for critical analysis of vampire literature, cinema and television.

Show a critical understanding of the origins and evolution of the literary vampire, including how vampire texts engage with their historical and sociopolitical contexts.
Perform close formal analysis of literary vampire texts, explaining their relations to concepts such as the Gothic, Romanticism and the Enlightenment.
Compare vampire texts using appropriate theoretical frameworks, such as adaptation theory or theories of gender and sexuality.
Demonstrate knowledge and skills acquired to the appropriate disciplinary and professional standard.
