Summary

This pod introduces and explores what has been called the defining genre of the twentieth century, Science Fiction. Taking H.G. Wells’s Scientific Romances of the 1890s as a starting point, it traces the development of the genre through the rise of the pulp magazines in the interwar years, the golden age of the 1940s and 50s, the New Wave of the 1960s and 70s, and on to the contemporary diversification and cultural prevalence of this way of seeing the world through possible futures and alternative presents.
