Summary
This pod introduces the student to runic writing systems in their various forms, their historical contexts and their value for linguistic and historical study. Runes are a form of alphabetic writing mostly encountered in inscriptions on physical objects, which provide some of our earliest evidence for the Germanic languages. Students will learn about the relationship of writing to speech, the adaptation of the writing system in different linguistic and cultural environments, and the challenges of reading and interpreting epigraphical texts.
