Summary

This pod will explore a variety of Romantic poetry, covering canonical and non-canonical works by writers from a range of backgrounds. Attention will be given to Romantic poetics, and the conditions of literary production at the time, as well as close-readings of individual works. Students will also be encouraged to interrogate the term ‘Romanticism’ exploring its meanings at the time and its subsequent use by literary historians.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate sound knowledge of the cultural and social contexts in which Romantic poetry was written and received.

Demonstrate an understanding of some of the formal properties of Romantic poetry through close reading.

Engage with the critical discussion around the term ‘Romanticism’.

Demonstrate knowledge and skills acquired to the appropriate disciplinary and professional standard.

Assimilate and present subject-specific material in an appropriate format (assessed within the ‘Assessment Portfolio’ 1, 2 or 3).
