Summary

This pod introduces students to the study of place-names which describe the landscape and which contain landscape terminology. Students will learn about the background and development of research in place-names and landscape, and will consider the different types of evidence landscape and place-names provide for history, geography, language, and culture. The pod will highlight recent and current research in the discipline, giving students the opportunity to engage critically with a range of topics and research projects from multidisciplinary perspectives.

Educational Aims

This module comprises an optional component in the following pathways: Applied English, Early Medieval Studies, Medieval Englishes, Name-Studies, and Norse and Viking Studies. As such, it contributes in its specific aims to the programme-level coverage of these pathways.

Learning Outcomes

Articulate thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and structures which form topographical place-names.

Demonstrate a clear understanding of methodologies underlying research into place-names and landscape.
