Summary
This pod introduces students to the rich variety of Old English literature in its original language, covering heroic poetry, elegy, biblical adaptations and hagiography, and riddles and charms. We begin by covering the art of translation with its aims and challenges. The particular difficulties of translating from Old English are addressed and a range of tools and approaches provided. We cover a range of genres, and students will develop their understanding Old English poetic form, as well as their knowledge of the context of early medieval England.
