Summary
This pod explores representations of space and place in medieval literature and culture. Students will be introduced to a wide range of literature from across the medieval period in Europe that demonstrates various ways of understanding and imagining the world. We will consider the interrelations between graphic maps and written descriptions of geography, exploring their different approaches to representing space. Materials will be presented within their historical and social contexts as we think about broader themes and ideas, including the dynamic between the local and the global, the interplay between history and geography, and the ways in which cosmology and mythology shape conceptions of the world. Students will also be guided towards and encouraged to reflect on current critical debates about the ‘Global Middle Ages.’
