Summary

This pod explores the use of discourse in media and political communication. Students will examine the role of discourse in institutional settings, including media interviews, political speeches and broadcasts, news reports, and commercial advertising. Students will be introduced to aspects of discourse besides language, considering other levels of semiosis and their contribution to meaning. Students will explore the relationship between discourse and power in media and political settings, equipping them with the theoretical and practical tools and insights for interrogating mass communication – communication that incorporates all forms of discourse: spoken, written and multi-modal.
