Summary
This pod explores language and gender in a range of workplace settings. Key concepts and empirical findings on stereotypical interactional styles in the workplace are reviewed. The main theoretical approaches and tools relevant to the study of professional identities are outlined. Students will critically examine how gendered identities intersect with ethnicity and social class. Following an overview of various perspectives on gender and leadership in organisations, students will examine research findings on the relation between language and gender in business meetings. By focusing on actual interactions between doctors and patients and health promotion materials, this pod also demonstrates how issues of gender affect medical practice. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to conduct a linguistic analysis of talk at work with a focus on issues related to gender.
