Summary
The aim of this pod is to introduce English Medium Instruction (EMI) as an area of study that focuses on the use of English to teach academic subjects to speakers of other language (i.e., whose first language is not English). In the globalised world, EMI has been gaining momentum as an educational model and is increasingly implemented across different countries and teaching contexts. As such, the pod introduces students to the theory and practice of EMI, reviewing key notions and research findings pertaining to this area. Examples of topics that are discussed include: the effects of EMI on the quality of education, teaching delivery and educational policy, the impact of EMI on results in content learning and language learning, the competences needed to be a successful EMI teacher and many more. By completing this pod, the students will gain a solid understanding of this growing area of research within applied linguistics, learning also about the practical implications of this work for the delivery of effective education.
