Summary

In this pod, students will consider the role of names and naming in literary texts across a variety of genres and forms. Consideration will be given to real-world naming practices and how these can be used effectively in the creation of fully realised fictional worlds. Both place- and personal names will be considered, and the pod will provide students with tools to analyse the naming and worldbuilding choices of published writers and to make informed choices in the creation of their own fictional worlds. Particular attention will be paid to the relationships between naming systems and settings, from historical fiction to science and speculative fiction. Students will make use of a range of scholarship from literary studies, stylistics, onomastics, and creative writing as part of their studies.
