Summary
This module explores the application of linguistic theory and methods for a forensic purpose. Settings in which forensic linguistics can play a key role include criminal cases, discourse about crime, the penal system, legislation and government policy, as well as journalistic and media discourse around crime and the law. Students will be presented with the different ways in which aspects of linguistic description and understanding can be applied to matters of, for example, authorship attribution, trustworthiness and believability, and the variant possibilities of different meanings and interpretations of evidence in context.
