Summary
This pod presents students with a range of Anglophone literature from the Indian sub-continent written during the period spanning the last decades of the British Empire and the growth of post-independence India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Students will analyse poetry and fiction by Indian and British authors, developing an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts for this literature as well as the approaches and readings suggested by postcolonial theories. The pod focuses in particular on the intersection between literary texts and wider political debates around nationalism, caste, sex and gender.
