Summary
This pod explores the nature of diverse language and communication systems. Students will see some of the many ways insects, birds, apes, and other animals communicate, and compare these to human language. In doing so, they will examine what makes human language so unique and when humans first evolved the ability to use language. Students will explore how language exists in the mind – models of how we recognise it, and how we process it. The pod also provides an in-depth look at how we produce language in its different modes, with particular attention to speech, writing, and sign language.
