Summary
The module looks at various approaches of collecting and processing data using both qualitative and quantitative methods of investigation. With a focus on the area of applied linguistics, students will be introduced to the process of hypothesis formulation and testing, issues of interpretation, evaluation and replicability of data and of research results, questionnaire and interview design, data gathering and recording, statistical description and analysis, qualitative data analysis and interpretation.
Target Students
Only available to on-site postgraduate students in the School of English.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: 3,000 word quantitative research report
- 40% Coursework 2: 2,000 word qualitative research report

Educational Aims
This module aims to provide students witha thorough grounding in collecting and processing data using both qualitative and quantitative research methods in an applied linguistics context;an introduction to electronic resources for analysing language data;the opportunity to engage in independent linguistic enquiries using on-line resources;skills of practical investigation, as well as the presentation and interpretation of language analyses.Learning Outcomes
