Summary
Students will choose a topic in consultation with the MA Course Convenor and an appropriate supervisor. The topic will normally be based on interests and skills students have developed in the course of the modules already studied.
Target Students
Only available to Distance Learning postgraduate students in the School of English.
Classes
Supervision will be via e-mail with individual students. Students are entitled to 6 hours supervision and supervisors will normally undertake to read a detailed plan plus a chapter or section of the dissertation.
Assessment
- 100% Dissertation: 12,000 - 15,000 words

Educational Aims
This module will provide students with:the opportunity to research in depth a topic of their choice, under the direction of a subject specialist;the skills and methodologies required to carry out sustained independent research.Learning Outcomes

- to evaluate current research and scholarship relating to a chosen topic;

Students will develop the ability: to articulate knowledge and understanding of the chosen area of study;
- to carry out research in a variety of media;
- to evaluate and make sure of the material acquired;
- to present their research accurately in writing.

Students will develop the ability:
- to work independently and with some degree of originality or creative application;
- to make judgements according to the available evidence to communicate their findings clearly in writing.
