Summary
The dissertation is an extended writing project in an area of writing chosen by you. It must be appropriate to your degree programme and approved by the convenor.
Target Students
Compulsory for all final-year students on Q3W8 English with Creative Writing. Not available to any other students.
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 4 weeks
Students focus their portfolio on one literary form: fiction (5500 words) or poetry (6 poems) or drama script (approx 35 mins duration) as approved by the supervisor
Assessment
- 70% Coursework 1: Portfolio of one literary form, as agreed with your supervisor: Fiction (5500 words), Poetry (6 poems)
- 30% Coursework 2: One 1500-word essay

Educational Aims
This module will provide students with the opportunity toexplore in depth an area of writing of their choice, under the direction of a member of staffdevelop a sustained engagement with their creative work, thus developing their capacity for independent study.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of
- a specific area of creative writing;
- the ability to produce original and creative work independently in the chosen area or areas;
- the ability to recognise their strengths and weaknesses within a chosen genre(s);
- the ability to locate their work within the contemporary context of their chosen genre(s);the ability to evaluate and reflect on their own creative process

- the ability to write accurately and grammatically, and make skilful use of language, employing appropriate techniques and manipulation of form;
- the ability to choose appropriate form and genre, construct original sustained or sequential piece(s) of fiction or poetry or drama;
- the ability to write independently, redrafting the work to an appropriate standard;
- the ability to write a reflective essay which will draw on drafts and wider reading, will give students insights into their own working practices over a sustained period, and which will demonstrate the analytical skills expected of an undergraduate at this level;
- the ability to seek, evaluate and respond to feedback;
- the ability to present work in a professional manner
