Summary
A specialist study of an individual topic in depth. Initial topic or project to be chosen from a range of supervisor research areas, and developed in consultation with the allocated supervisor. If, as part of your studies, you would like to request a library loan for an item held in a library elsewhere, you should be aware that a small charge of £1.00 will be levied by the Library. However, if you are undertaking a final year dissertation in English, you may approach your dissertation supervisor to request an Inter-Library Loan voucher. Such requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Target Students
Only available for all final-year students on Single and Joint Honours English programmes excluding Q3W8 English with Creative Writing, including 2+2 programmes. Not available for students on Q3W8 English with Creative Writing.
Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 4 weeks
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 4 weeks
4 Workshops; 2 in autumn; 2 in spring, teaching weeks 2 and 6 of each weeks Additional training sessions on preparing bibliographies; organising work; preparing final submissions, as well as a further training session on Library Skills will also be required.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: One 5000 to 7000-word dissertation or research project of equivalent work-load to be agreed with the module convenor

Educational Aims
This module will provide students with the opportunity to:research in depth a topic of their choice, under the direction of a member of staffpresent a sustained analysis of their work, thus developing their capacity for independent study.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of:
an area of study covering at least one of the 7 categories of the English programme; fulfilment of this requirement will be one of the criteria used by the Director of Undergraduate Studies in approving the topic

- the ability to think independently within the intellectual framework of current scholarship in the chosen topic
- the ability acquire substantial quantities of information on the chosen topic and select and organize the material within the framework of your choice
