Summary

This module bridges the study of literature and the study of language, and offers a training in the discipline of literary linguistics, also known as stylistics. The emphasis is on the analysis of linguistic and narratological aspects of literary texts, in order to show their linguistic patterns and provide an account of their readerly effects, significance, meaning and value. The module offers an opportunity for specialisation in preparation for level 3 modules in modern English language, particularly in the areas of stylistics, cognitive poetics and narratology.

Target Students

Compulsory for BA English Students, available to Joint Honours with ELL (UNMC).

Classes

One 3-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks

The 'practical' will be an interactive practical lecture.

Assessment

30% Coursework 1: One 1500-word core descriptive analysis, submitted mid-semester
70% Coursework 2: One 3500-word stylistics essay, submitted end of semester

Educational Aims

This module aims to provide students with an opportunity for the advanced study of the English language in its artistic context an opportunity to analyse complex linguistic patterns and functions in a wide variety of different literary texts an opportunity for systematic training in literary linguistic practice
