Summary
This module bridges the study of literature and the study of language, and offers a training in the discipline of literary linguistics, also known as stylistics. The emphasis is on the analysis of linguistic and narratological aspects of literary texts, in order to show their linguistic patterns and provide an account of their readerly effects, significance, meaning and value. The module offers an opportunity for specialisation in preparation for level 3 modules in modern English language, particularly in the areas of stylistics, cognitive poetics and narratology.
Target Students
Compulsory for second-year students on Q392 English Language and Literature, QQ33 English Language and Literature (2+2) and QQ13 English Language and Applied Linguistics (2+2). Optional for second-year students on other SH and JH English programmes; students participating in exchanges from the School partner institutions; and second or third year students on the Liberal Arts programme.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: One 1500-word core descriptive analysis, submitted mid-semester
- 70% Coursework 2: One 3500-word stylistics essay, submitted end of semester
