Summary
This module will introduce you to the language, literature and culture of medieval England. You will read a variety of medieval texts from Old and Middle English, as well as comparative texts from Old Norse sources, and will discuss ideas of Englishness and identity. The module will familiarise you with the philological knowledge necessary for the reading and understanding of medieval texts, and introduce you to the basics of grammar and spelling conventions.
Target Students
Only available to First Year Single and Joint Honours English students, Liberal Arts students and 2 +2 students. Not available to exchange students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 21 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 21 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Coursework 1 - (Autumn semester) - Essay
- 50% Coursework 2: Coursework 2 - (Spring semester) - Commentary
