Summary
The thermodynamics module covers the concepts and principles of thermodynamics and their applications to engineering problems. Topics covered include:
- The first and second law of Thermodynamics.
- Core thermodynamic concepts, system types and the application to engineering systems.
- Basic power cycles and their thermodynamic analysis (steam, gas turbine and reciprocating internal combustion engine).
- Modern power plants (including refrigeration and heat pump plant).
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be reassessed by retaking the failed assessment (resubmission of coursework or resit of examination). The re-assessment mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
This module is only available to Apprentices on the Electro-mechanical Engineer Degree Level Apprenticeship
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Question based assignment
- 15% Laboratory 1: Assessment of laboratory including the written report of results.
- 15% Inclass Exam 1: Open book in class test - 1 hour duration
- 40% Exam 1 (2-hour): Open book exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of thermodynamics and their applications to engineering problems. The learning outcomes for the Thermodynamics module cover the assimilation of the thermodynamics elements of the Electro-Mechanical engineer apprenticeship standard. The module also develops the skills of following a methodical approach and the behaviour of quality focus.Thermodynamics: core thermodynamic concepts, system types and the application to engineering systems: basic power cycles and their thermodynamic analysis (steam, gas turbine and reciprocating internal combustion engine), modern power plants (including refrigeration and heat pump plant). (KSB K7)Follow a methodical approach to engineering problem solving (KSB S2)Quality focussed. Follows rules, procedures and principles in ensuring work completed is fit for purpose and pays attention to detail / error checks throughout activities. (KSB B5)Learning Outcomes
Comprehend the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics as detailed in K7 (knowledge and comprehension). (KSB K7)
Apply these concepts to simplified engineering scenarios (comprehension and application). (KSB K7, S5)
Recognise and construct an appropriate analysis technique and methodical approach to apply when presented with a simple engineering scenario in a thermodynamic context (comprehension, application, moving towards analysis). (KSB K7, S2, S5)
K7
S1, S2, S5
B2, B5, B9
Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and attention to detail and error checking throughout (comprehension, application) (KSB S1, S2, B2, B5)
