Summary
This year long module introduces students to the properties of materials, the main failure mechanisms which a designer will be concerned with (e.g. overload, fracture, creep, fatigue) and core manufacturing methods used in engineering applications. It includes the following topics:
- The role of materials and material properties in the design process.
- The selection and use of materials.
- The basic science underlying material properties.
- Approaches to avoid failure of materials to provide the knowledge with which to design materials with better properties.
- An introduction to manufacturing processes
- An introduction to common manufacturing processes including Subtractive, Additive and Forming techniques, along with finishing and treatment processes. Topics such as: casting, machining, moulding, forming, powder processing, Additive Manufacturing (AM), heat treatment, coatings and surface finishing.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be reassessed by resubmission of any elements that were not satisfactory. If the presentation was unsatisfactory the student will be required to submit a recording of a revised presentation.
Target Students
This module is only available to Apprentices on the Electromechanical Engineer Degree Level Apprenticeship.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Portfolio
- 20% Coursework 2: Poster
- 10% Coursework 3: 8-10 page report
- 40% Exam 1 (2-hour): Open book exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the properties of materials, the main failure mechanisms which a designer will be concerned with, and the core high and low value manufacturing processes used in engineering applications.Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes for this module cover the knowledge of the Materials and Manufacturing elements of the electromechanical apprenticeship standard, namely:
• Materials: the main classes of engineering materials and their associated mechanical, electrical and environmental properties. How to select appropriate materials to achieve manufacturing and design goals. Thermal treatments and coatings. How to use software to model material properties and behaviour, analysis of experimental results. Avoidance, use and disposal of harmful materials. (KSB K6)
• Manufacturing: the considerations when turning raw materials into a finished product in the most efficient way possible: common methods and models for the manufacturing process, design for manufacture, production drawings, quality control. (KSB K13)
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
L1. Comprehend the basic attributes of materials related to their class, including mechanical, electrical, and environmental properties. (KSB K6)
L2. Understand how to select appropriate materials to achieve manufacturing and design goals, including failure mechanisms of materials and approaches that can be used to enhance material properties (e.g., thermal treatments and coatings). (KSB K5, K6, K13)
L3. Understand how to use software to model material properties and behaviour, and how to analyse experimental results. (KSB K2, K5, K6)
L4. Describe a range of manufacturing processes, understanding key engineering principles and apply them to analyse those manufacturing processes. (KSB K13)
L5. Consider the engineering design process as a whole, including material selection, design for manufacture, quality control, fail-safe design, material life-cycle, sustainability, and the avoidance, use, and disposal of harmful materials. (KSB K2, K5, K6, K13, B8)
