Summary
In this module a student will be assigned to an individual supervisor who will be a staff member in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The student will carry out a practical or theoretical industrially relevant project, which could be undertaken within industry. The student will be expected to conduct a literature survey, undertake initial practical or theoretical research and or development work and write a report on this work. This project is equivalent to the 60 credit MSc project (EEEE4129) taken by students on three-semester MSc courses in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
Reassessment, if required, will be by resubmission of the Progress Report.
Target Students
Only available to MSc students on the 2 year MSc program from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Assessment
- 10% Interim Report: 16 pages
- 80% Progress Report: 120 pages
- 10% Project presentation: 30 minute presentation
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The module aims to give experience of starting a major research investigation with an industrial context within the topic area of their MSc course, including planning the work to meet a final deadline and reporting on the work both in a dissertation and by an informal oral presentation.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- LO1 - Plan future project activities for substantial time ahead.
- LO2 - Undertake a background literature review and use this to set their own work into a wider context of research and development.
- LO3 - Apply knowledge from their MSc in carrying out analysis, design, modelling and/or testing of an engineering component or system which is relevant to industry.
This module contributes to the delivery of the following Engineering Council outcomes: M1, M2, C3, M3, M4, M7, M16 and M17.
