Summary

This module covers the design and analysis of electronic systems used in telecommunications particularly wireless devices. Devices covered typically include passive components such as transmission lines, directional couplers, periodic structures, and active devices such as amplifiers and oscillators.

 

Reassessment of the module, if required, will be by reassessment of the failed elements.

Educational Aims

To provide students with the necessary background information so that they can analyse and specify RF and microwave components for applications in telecommunications, and the knowledge to design simple wireless devices such as a transistor amplifier and a microwave filter. The origins and effects of noise in electronic circuits are introduced.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

LO1 Apply engineering principles to analyse BJT transistor models and circuit configurations.

LO2 Assess the frequency responses of MOSFET amplifier circuits.

LO3 Develop transistor circuits such as Differential Amplifiers, Current Sources and Active Loads.

LO4 Design and evaluate a BJT amplifier taking into account criteria such as device stability and noise performance. The design will require the ability to use a commercial RF CAD tool.

LO5 Understand origins and effect of noise.

LO6 Apply knowledge of mathematics and engineering principles to the solution of propagation on high frequency transmission lines and periodic structures.

LO7 Apply the transmission line technique principles to impedance matching problems.

LO8 Evaluate the performance of a microwave component (for example one of the following devices: periodic structures, oscillator, transformer, directional coupler, filter) using network analysis principles.

LO9 Design and evaluate the performance of a microwave component using a commercial software.
