Summary

This module examines and develops the theory, professional understanding and practice of classroom teaching in one of six specialist areas. It develops professional knowledge, understanding, skills and values and engagement with recent theoretical and pedagogic developments.

Only available for One Year PGCE Students

Delivered through a combination of lectures, distance learning and interactive seminars.

Educational Aims

This module provides an opportunity for candidates to:• develop a critical understanding of the literature and theory of education• consider recent developments and issues in teaching and learning• develop professional skills, knowledge and understanding for teaching• find intellectual challenge and stimulation• reflect on personal and professional goals and targets• improve the quality of teaching and of student learning.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
•a broad understanding of the current issues in subject teaching and learning;
•knowledge of the key theoretical positions on learning;
•understanding of the current education policy framework.

Intellectual skills
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
•improved critical reading and synthesis of academic and professional literatures;
•improved critical reading of educational texts and discourses, of school policies and classroom practices.

Professional / practical skills
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
•enhanced professional practice through the application of knowledge, skills and understanding developed throughout the module;
•capacities to apply literatures and research evidence to professional practice.

On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
•critical reflection on their own beliefs, practice, and development as secondary school teachers;
•skills in reading, analysing and synthesising literature;
