Summary
This module entails the researching and writing of a substantive piece of scholarship within the field of the PGCHE. Participants choose a topic in consultation with the module convenor and an appropriate project advisor. This module builds on previous PGCHE modules to allow participants to undertake an inquiry project which makes use of understanding of Higher Education gained in the previous two modules. It is rooted in the principles and practices of educational inquiry. This is prefaced on a commitment to the centrality of inquiry in educational practices and emphasises the benefits of an inquiry perspective on teaching for educators and students alike. The participants who take this module spend most of their time undertaking a project negotiated with their tutor of PGCHE project advisor.
Target Students
Only available for members of staff enrolled on the PGCHE.
Classes
Delivered through workshops and individual tutorials.
Assessment
- 100% Presentation: Inquiry Project Presentation 30 minutes or 3,000 words research report
Assessed in both autumn & spring semest
Educational Aims
The module aims to allow the participant to engage in a substantive piece of scholarship on a subject related to the PGCHE, chosen in consultation with the module convenor and nominated advisor. This module aims to provide participants with:● the opportunity to research in depth a topic of their choice, under the direction of a subject specialist● the skills required to carry out sustained independent educational research.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to adopt a scholarly approach to the review and evaluation of learning activities and assessments using a range of media.
In practice this means participants will be able to:
1. Reflect critically on the influence of constraints and limitations on the completed inquiry project.
2. Integrate scholarship, or research and or professional activity or other evidence into teaching and learning practices.
3. Critically select information from appropriate literature and/ or other sources to inform the completion of an inquiry project.
4. Plan and systematically execute a small-scale piece of research on some aspect of learning and teaching, devising research questions and methodologies commensurate with educational research.
5. Apply processes of ethical conduct to create an ethically informed piece of inquiry.
