Summary

This module focuses on ensuring that participants understand the context within which they are working and are able to plan and teach appropriate learning activities and support students effectively. Participants are required to engage in peer observation processes and reflect critically to enhance their own practice. 

The module starts with examining the UK HE Context, introducing the Professional Standards Framework (2023) and examining theories of how students learn. This is followed by an introduction to curriculum and quality assurance, designing teaching and learning activities, exploring a range of methods that could be used, including learning technologies, and evaluating their effectiveness. The module will continue with a look at the purpose of assessment and marking and giving feedback before examining ways to support students and develop effective learning environment. 

Throughout the module participants will be expected to consider the nature of the students they teach and explore generic and subject-specific literature to inform their work. 
 

Target Students

Only available for members of staff enrolled on the PGCHE.

Classes

Delivered through a mix of workshops, small group work and peer observation and discussion process.

Assessment

Assessed in both autumn & spring semest

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to ensure that participants are aware of their responsibilities, can plan and deliver appropriate teaching and learning activities for their students, respond to feedback, support their students effectively and reflect critically on their own practice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, participants will be able to 
1. Identify and discuss key theories of learning and teaching in HE and how these influence practice.

2. Design and plan teaching and learning activities that take into account the diversity of students.

3. Teach and/or support learning through appropriate approaches and environments.

4. Critically reflect on approaches to supporting and guiding learners relevant to their context.

5.Participate in peer review processes and professional dialogue to enhance practice. 

6. Use formative assessment methods to support learning appropriate to their context.
