Summary
The module considers the legal and policy context influencing counsellors work with children and young people. This includes institutional contexts for the work with a particular focus on education, health and youth services settings. Students will reflect on challenges and opportunities involved in reconciling multi-layered systems (political, legal, organizational, individual & family) with person-centred experiential philosophy of practice. Participants will examine the notion of presence as a professional in support of the child and their family. Students will engage in experiential group work activities to develop their awareness, understanding and skills for engagement with key stakeholders, agencies and institutions.
Building on the systemic framework for mapping the social, psychological and emotional development of children & young people, students will look across influencing experiences, including developmental landmarks & events which either help or hinder children & young people flourishing.
The module hones understanding on a range of approaches to therapeutic practice focusing on creative expression and play therapy approaches.
The module addresses work with children & young people covering contemporary themes and issues facing children & young people, and the contexts they inhabit. Specific issues are addressed that adapt and reflect the changing lives of children & young people.

Students registered on the MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy course.

Assessment
- 25% Coursework 1: 2,500 words reflective essay (Autumn)
- 50% Coursework 2: 5,000 words (Spring)
- 25% Presentation: 20 minute in class presentation/vlog/YouTube video presentation/online blog (Spring)
- Participation: 90% attendance required for individual accreditation with a professional body across both semesters
