Summary
This module examines and develops theoretical and professional understanding of schools, particularly the socio-cultural contexts that both frame and are shaped by schools. The module explores the significance of cultural, political, social and economic contexts and the ways in which these influence what are identified as key educational issues for debate within education. It also examines the nature of care in schools, pupil voice, the legal framework of education and education for citizenship.
Target Students
Only available for One Year PGCE students.
Classes
Module is taught through a combination of directed teaching, lectures, distance learning and work-based case work.

Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
a broad understanding of the social-cultural-political nature of secondary education including: the legal framework of teaching, the teacher’s duty of care (e.g., child protection, pastoral care, anti-bullying), pupil voice, education for citizenship, school governance, social factors and education achievement.
Intellectual skills
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
a critical appreciation of the social context of education
improved critical reading and synthesis of academic and professional literatures
the ability to inquire and critique school practices.
Professional / practical skills
On successful completion of this module, candidates will have:
increased expertise in the use of knowledge of the socio-cultural context of schooling to increase equity and thereby create more democratic schools
capacities to apply literatures and research evidence to professional practice.
