Summary
The importance and relevance of difference and diversity in counselling.
Exploring the lived experience and emotional impact of difference and diversity in relationships.
Specific aspects of difference and diversity to include but not limited to: race, culture, age, gender, poverty, disability, sexuality, class and education and religion and spirituality.
Target Students
BA Education students or other undergraduate students in Part I (Year 2) or Part II (Year 3 or 4).
Classes
This module is taught through a series of workshops.
Assessment
- 100% Presentation: 15 - 20 minute presentation

Educational Aims
To provide a practical and theoretical introduction to the concepts of difference and diversity with specific focus on difference and diversity in relationships· To provide a challenging learning environment which will support students to deepen their understanding of specific and relevant areas related to difference and diversity.· To explore the lived experience and emotional impact of difference and diversity· To provide an effective learning environment which will support students to explore issues including unconscious bias and privilegeLearning Outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
Intellectual Skills
1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of that which constitutes difference and diversity
2) Identify and describe aspects of personal and cultural conditioning
3) Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of important aspects of difference and diversity including but not limited to the following areas: Issues of Power and Oppression, Enculturation, Equality of opportunity, Hegemony and privilege, Religiosity and Spirituality, Race, Sexual Orientation and Physicality.
4) Demonstrate awareness and understanding of how these issues relate to their own lived experience and how they impact on relationships
Transferable (key) skills
1) Communicate effectively in relation to topics, ideas and theories relevant to difference and diversity within the learning group, using written or oral means
2) Demonstrate an ability to work effectively on group tasks
3) Participate in self and peer assessment process
4) Direct and manage own learning
