Summary

This module involves developing aspects of language and academic literacies needed to study at tertiary level.  The module considers:
•    an understanding of academic discourse and its literacy requirements
•    the development of reading and research skills to enable effective production of the above
•    the structure and conventions of written academic English
•    the structure and conventions of spoken academic English in seminars and presentations
•    oral and aural skills in participating in seminars and giving in-class presentations
•    the importance of reflection in academic work

Target Students

Undergraduate students at UoN as part of their degree in order to afford them the opportunity to develop and refine their academic skills, with a specific emphasis on successful writing.

Classes

This module is taught via seminars.

Assessed in both autumn & spring semest

Educational Aims

The module will give students the opportunity to learn the academic communication and study skills they will encounter in their academic discipline in order to more effectively engage in the learning processes and enhance their learning experience. The module will encourage the development research and critical reading skills, writing and oral presentation skills (e.g. through seminar discussions) with a view to the production of a purposeful research project with an emphasis in written presentation.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
Students who complete this course will be able to demonstrate:
•    knowledge and understanding of academic communities;
•    a developing ability to work autonomously;
•    a developing ability to use a critical approach to reading and research

Intellectual Skills:
Students who complete this course will be able to:
•    identify and analyse information including researched and other forms of evidence
•    identify knowledge gained through experiential learning and activities such as classroom debates, seminars and presentations to evaluate and reflect on their own practice
•    develop an ability to analyse and apply spoken and written academic discourse in a range of communicative contexts
•    Develop a clear understanding of academic conventions and academic integrity

Professional Practical Skills:
Students who complete this course will be able to:
•    demonstrate improved control of a range of academic conventions, vocabulary and structures, and improved control of a range of discourse features;
•    reflect on their own practice to identify development goals in their learning;
•    demonstrate improved competency in effective and analytical reading, writing, listening and speaking for academic purposes, with an emphasis on focus, relevance, stance and the use of evidence in writing
 

Transferable / Key Skills:
Students who complete this course will be able to:
•    analyse their personal and academic development through self-awareness and reflection
•    communicate accurately and clearly to an academic audience in written, verbal and visual forms
•    demonstrate interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
•    analyse and work to specific requirements
