Summary
Students will acquire basic skills of consecutive interpreting through practice in the range of settings that they may encounter as an interpreter, including public speaking skills, tactics of interpreting (comprehension, note-taking, reformulation, etc.) and sight translation.
Please note: This module is assessed at the end of Autumn semester. Re-sit exams are scheduled normally in the summer and can take the same form as the missing/ failed component of the assessment (exam, essay etc.) or other form, as decided by the School.
Target Students
BA students of English with International Business, English Language & Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, exchange students and students from other schools in UNNC by arrangement.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 10 weeks
One 1.5-hour lecture plus 1.5-hour seminar/workshop for 10 weeks in:Introduction to and practicing public speaking skills, phases of consecutive interpreting (listening, analysis, memory, production), notetaking for consecutive interpreting, and sight translation; practicing public speaking and consecutive interpreting in contexts, such as business presentations, after dinner speeches, and cultural tours; and sight translation
Assessment
- 50% Sight Translation Exam (0-hour-20-minute): In both directions, each for about 3-5 minutes in source language. Midterm examination (in week 5) or take-home examination.
- 50% Consecutive Interpreting Exam (0-hour-5-minute): In both directions, each for about 3-5 minutes in source language. Tabled examination or take-home examination.
Educational Aims
This module aims at developing students’ awareness and understanding of practical issues ininterpreting throughinterpreting texts in various subject areas while developing skills in resolving different types ofinterpreting problems: syntactic, semantic and pragmatic among others. It will also serve to enrich students’ background knowledge in different subject areas and upgrade students’ language level and communication skills so as to facilitate their further study.Learning Outcomes
