Summary

The module is intended to provide an overview of advanced mathematical techniques used in economics. Examples of economic issues that can be analysed using mathematical models will be discussed in detail. Particular attention will be given to providing an intuitive understanding of the logic behind the formal results presented. Students who wish to pursue a higher degree in economics will find the module particularly useful.

Target Students

Available for final year Undergraduate students on Economics degree programmes (including final year Undergraduate students on the BA Jt Hons Politics and Economics and BSc Jt Hons Mathematics and Economics degrees). Not available for Exchange students.

Classes

This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and tutorials.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

There are three main aims for this module and they are:To provide a rigorous grounding in certain mathematical tools and methods of argumentation used in economic theory. To develop a clear perception of the role of mathematical tools and logical methods in the construction of the formal models in economics. To inculcate the ability to analyse economic problems through rigorous applications of the formal models.

Learning Outcomes

On completing this module, the learning outcomes are such that students will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding:
A3 Show understanding of analytical methods, both theory- and model-based.
A4 Demonstrate understanding of verbal, graphical, mathematical and econometric representation of economic ideas and analysis, including the relationship between them.
A5 Show understanding of relevant mathematical and statistical techniques.

Intellectual Skills:
B1 Work with abstract concepts and in a context of generality.
B2 Reason logically and work analyticall

Transferable Skills:
D1 apply mathematical, statistical and graphical techniques in an appropriate manner.
