Summary

This module gives students a rigorous and formal introduction to the field of financial economics. The course is split into two main topics: corporate finance and asset pricing. Corporate finance asks: if a firm wants to undertake a new project, how should they finance it? Asset pricing aims to explain the determinants of asset returns. Each section starts with theoretical foundations then moves towards detailing empirical evidence from research.

Target Students

Available for final year Undergraduate students on Economics degree programmes (including final year Undergraduate students on the BA Jt Hons Politics and Economics and BSc Jt Hons Mathematics and Economics degrees). Not available for Exchange students.

This module is delivered through a series of lectures and tutorials.

Educational Aims

The primary aims of the module are:To analyse the role of financial markets in the presence of frictions.To examine the implications of financial frictions for corporate and consumer finance.To examine the impact of financial shocks on the economy.The module aims to enable the participants to develop:Professional communication: students must communicate effectively with their peers to write a presentation. The module will also help to develop presentation and essay writing skills.Co-ordinating with others to produce a group presentation and essay.Digital capabilities through the use of library e-resources to help access primary resources, such as journal articles. Become familiar with presentation and file sharing software.Reflection of understanding of material through formative feedback.

On completing this module students should be able to:
