Summary

An independent research project, involving the application of techniques of economic analysis to a self-chosen research topic and the presentation of an academic article. Guidance will also be provided on economic research methods and writing an undergraduate dissertation in economics.

Target Students

Available for final year Undergraduate students on specific Economics degree programmes. Also available for final year BSc Jt Hons Maths and Economics students. This module is not available for students on the following degrees: BA Jt Hons Politics and Economics, BA Hons Philosophy, Politics and Economics, BA Hons Economics and Philosophy.

Classes

This module is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and computing classes.

Educational Aims

The purpose of the Dissertation is for students to demonstrate familiarity with a particular area of economics and apply economic analysis to address a specific research question (or questions). The Dissertation must include a contribution that is your own (i.e. not just a summary of the ideas of others). In many cases, your contribution will be a piece of empirical or theoretical analysis, applying techniques you have acquired over your degree programme or during your dissertation research to look in depth at a specific issue. In some cases, you may undertake an analytic literature survey in which case your contribution would be to bring the literature together in a new way and derive implications or lessons.The module aims to enable the participants to develop:Professional communication: students have to present an overview of their work in seminars.Digital capabilities through an ability to understand verbal, graphical, mathematical and econometric representation of ideas and analysis, evaluating, analysing and presenting.Reflection through the brain storming sessions and seminars and individual supervision.
