Summary
This module looks at public finances in the UK, market failures, welfare economics, externalities, public goods, social insurance and social security, design of education and health systems, taxation and equity, excess burden of taxation and tax incidence.
Target Students
Available to Year 2 Undergraduate students on Economics degree programmes who have studied ECON1001 Introduction to Microeconomics or ECON1043 Foundations of Economics. Available to Year 2 Undergraduate students on the BA Jt Hons Politics and Economics and BSc Jt Hons Maths and Economics degrees. Also available to Economics Exchange students with relevant pre-requisites.

Educational Aims
Educational aims:To provide an overview of economic tools that are used to analyse government decision-making.The module aims to enable the participants to develop:Digital capabilities through the use of library e-resources to help access primary resources, such as journal articles.Reflection of understanding of material through formative feedback.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students should:
- Have an appreciation of the principal forms of market failure that justify government intervention.
- Be familiar with the principal policy instruments used to mitigate market failures, and with the principles that guide their "optimal" use.
- Be familiar with the limitations on what can be achieved by government intervention.
- Be familiar with the principal areas of government intervention, such as social insurance, education and health markets.
- Be aware of the issues related to effects and incidence of taxation.
