Summary
This module involves exploration of current topics relating to computer security, in order to enable an appreciation and understanding of the state-of-the-art in both cyber security research and professional practice.
Weekly lecture content is based upon issue identified and delivered by staff from the cyber security research group (and other relevant areas as appropriate), as well as relevant external speakers. While much of the resulting topic coverage is not fixed, the module ensures focus on the latest threats and defences, as well as the requirements for and/or application of computer security in the context of emerging technologies.
Certain core topics will always be included to ensure clear and direct linkage to the themes of the non-cyber modules in the Cyber Physical Systems degree programme (with a general session on concepts and principles, plus dedicated coverage of themes around security in autonomous and sensor-based systems). The remaining sessions in the formal lecture series (delivered by the academic staff and external guest speakers) will draw on other themes that are topical at the time of delivery.
Following an initial period of preparatory seminars, each week a student (or group of students) delivers a one-hour presentation on an assigned topic in cyber security followed by a discussion. Each presentation includes a follow-up period for online discussion, in which groups are expected to respond to questions posed by other groups regarding the material delivered. The work culminates in the production of written reports, in which groups document their findings from the initial research and follow-up discussions.
Target Students
Available to Level 4 PGT students in the School of Computer Science. This module is not available to students not listed above without explicit approval from the module convenor(s). This module is part of the Operating Systems, Networks and Security theme in the School of Computer Science.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Written analysis and presentation of assigned topic(s).
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
To give a deeper understanding and appreciation of important topical trends in Cyber Security which were introduced in other modules. To expose students to current research in computer security and provide them the opportunity to explain reported results and findings to an audience of fellow students.Learning Outcomes
