Summary
Data Visualisation is the process of extracting knowledge from complex data and presenting it to users in a manner that is appropriate to their needs. This module provides the foundation for effective Data Visualisation design. You will learn about the different approaches to constructing visualisations, including the representation of ambiguous and time-series data. You will also learn about cognitive and visual perception theories that help explain how humans process information visually, and how to apply these to the design of effective visualisations.
If you want to learn advanced design and implementation of interactive Data Visualisation, you should consider taking the linked module COMP3022 Data Visualisation Project, of which this module is a pre-requisite. Together, these two modules form an integrated 20-credit programme of study.
Target Students
Available to Level 3 and Level 4 students in the School of Computer Science. This module is part of the Human-Computer Interaction theme in the School of Computer Science.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour computing each week for 11 weeks
Lectures will be accompanied by reading material and worked examples designed to develop your understanding of the topic. Engagement with this material is considered to be an essential part of taking this module.
Assessment
- 75% Coursework 1: Practical assignment with a written report. Students are expected to design and create visualisations to analyse a dataset of their choice. The process and results are then discussed in a written report. Reassessment for the module is 100% coursework.
- 25% Quiz 1: 1 hour in-person in-class quiz. Reassessment for the module is 100% coursework.
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To develop student's knowledge and skills in designing and implementing effective data visualisations.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of a broad range of styles, applications and delivery mechanisms for data visualisations.
An understanding of important conceptual challenges in designing data visualisations.
An understanding of how people interact with visualisations, to incorporate important psychological theories of human information processing.
