Summary

This module provides an introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Greek; no previous knowledge is assumed. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to read Greek; the basis of the course is the study and translation of passages adapted from classical Greek texts.
Any reassessment for this module will be by essay or assignment.

Target Students

Available to all Postgraduate level 4 students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, exchange and subsidiary students. The module should be taken with CLAR4036 in the same academic year. Any students with a valid reason why they cannot do both modules, or with other queries, should contact the module convenor.

Educational Aims

To introduce basic Ancient Greek grammar, syntax and vocabulary and thereby enable students to read and understand simple texts in Ancient Greek.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

Greek accidence and syntax and its interpretation;

the relevance of Greek texts for the study of ancient history, society and visual culture.

Intellectual Skills:

Acquire substantial quantities of information systematically and process it effectively.

Professional Practical Skills:

Read Greek texts independently and with a high level of accuracy and understanding;

translate unseen a straightforward passage in Greek from poetry or non-technical prose.

 Transferable (key) skills:

Work productively with others;

organise and manage their working time, including scheduling tasks and meeting deadlines.
