Summary
Detailed guided study in Latin of a prose or verse text or texts designed for those pursuing further study of Latin as part of an MA course. Careful attention will be paid to the development of translation skills, but the focus of the module will not be merely linguistic. Students will also be encouraged to explore the set text's interrelation with its literary tradition and its background as well as to appreciate style and imagery through their access to the text in the original language.
Target Students
Available to all Postgraduate level 4 students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, exchange and subsidiary students. The module should be taken with CLAR4034 in the same academic year. Any students with a valid reason why they cannot do both modules, or with other queries, should contact the module convenor.

Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
- Two 1-hour seminars each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 70% Coursework: Individual portfolio of exercises
- 30% Exam (1-hour): One-hour exam

Educational Aims
To develop students' ability to read Latin with fluency, understanding and insight through the study of a Latin text and to reinforce their knowledge of the Latin language both through reading and by reinforcing accidence and syntax.Learning Outcomes

translate unseen a passage in Latin from poetry and non-technical prose at an appropriate level;
