Summary
This is an advanced version of one of the Autumn Semester UG Level Year 2/3 option modules, where MA students attend the same lectures, but have their own dedicated seminar group with a programme and assessment appropriate for MA Level.
Target Students
Only available to Level 4 MA in Classics students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, and to subsidiary and exchange Level 4 students with appropriate knowledge of ancient history, archaeology or ancient art.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Lectures will be the same as the relevant UG module. The MA seminar will take place on a weekly basis.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: 5,000 word essay or project

Educational Aims
(a) To acquire detailed knowledge and understanding of the module subject;(b) To gain close familiarity with relevant ancient sources and material evidence, and to engage critically with them;(c) To gain close familiarity with modern scholarship and approaches to the subject, and to engage critically with them.Learning Outcomes
(1) Knowledge and Understanding:
overall knowledge of the module subject;
detailed knowledge of an appropriate and diverse range of material (both ancient and modern);
understanding of different theoretical approaches to the subject.
(2) Intellectual Skills:
enhancement of capacity for critical judgement, and of ability to gather, memorize, organize and deploy information, to extract key elements from data and identify and solve associated problems, to engage in analytical and evaluative thinking, and to marshal argument.
(3) Professional/Practical Skills:
enhancement of ability to select, sift and synthesize information from a range of primary and secondary sources;
to identify and compare central arguments in relation to these materials;
to use library resources effectively;
and to word-process as well as present material with attention to detail and accuracy, including appropriate referencing skills.
(4) Transferable Skills:
enhancement of ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
