Summary
This module continues the study of Latin from the level reached in Beginners' Latin 2. It provides the opportunity to revise basic aspects of the Latin language and enables students to proceed to the reading of Latin texts. The assessment-pattern emphasises comprehension and analysis of grammatical structures over memorisation and translation.
Target Students
Available to all Undergraduate level 2 and level 3 students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students.CLAR3013 and CLAR3014 should be taken as a pair, but if there is a valid reason why you are unable to enrol for one or other of these modules, please contact Nicholas Wilshere, the departmental Language Teaching Co-ordinator, to discuss your options.
Classes
- Two 1-hour seminars each week for 10 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 70% Coursework 1: Individual portfolio of exercises
- 30% Exam 1 (1-hour): 1 hour exam

Educational Aims
This module aims to further develop the ability to read, understand and translate Latin. The module will consolidate the grammatical knowledge acquired in Beginners' Latin: 1 and 2 (CLAR1001 and CLAR1002), expand your working vocabulary, and enable you to begin the study of simple unadapted Latin literary texts.Learning Outcomes

Latin syntax and its interpretation; critical and theoretical approaches to the study of Latin texts in the original language;
literary, cultural and historical contexts for Latin literature;
the relevance of Latin texts for the study of ancient history, society and visual culture.

Engage in close and logical analysis of texts and arguments;
acquire substantial quantities of information systematically and process it effectively.
Professional Practical Skills:
Read Latin texts independently and with a high level of accuracy and understanding;
translate unseen a straightforward passage in Latin from poetry and non-technical prose.
