Summary

Students will work in groups on the design and planning of a Civil Engineering project, such as a large building development, energy or other utility or element of transport or other infrastructure. The projects will embrace most subject areas and some or all of the following:
(1) Feasibility studies
(2) Detailed design
(3) Preparation of project documents
(4) Project planning and cost estimates
(5) Environmental issues, sustainability, effects of climate change and safety risk assessment.

Staff teams, together with visiting professional engineers, will be available for consultation and guidance.

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.

Target Students

Part III MEng students in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To introduce students to large multi-disciplinary Civil Engineering design projects and give students experience of working in groups and individually to solve a complex Civil Engineering design problem, which includes consideration of environmental issues, sustainability, effects of climate change and safety risk assessment.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
LO1 - Work in teams and individually to apply civil engineering knowledge to the design of a  multi-disciplinary project, which includes consideration of environmental issues, sustainability, effects of climate change and safety risk assessment.

LO2 - Describe, evaluate and communicate civil engineering design at feasibility and detailed design stages.

LO3 - Compile elements of civil engineering design into a detailed submission.

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M4, M5, M6
- Professional/Practical skills: M7, M8, M9, M14, M15
