Summary

This course (module) provides opportunity for final-year students to undertake a long-term individual research project appropriate to their particular interests. It normally takes the form of an investigative, development or design project, culminating in the presentation of a detailed final report. Typically the project involves some or all of: equipment design or modification, laboratory or field investigation, data collection and processing, computer modelling.

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.

Target Students

Part III MEng students in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To: (i) carry out an in-depth study on a research proposal; (ii) develop an in-depth understanding of the topic through personal study; (iii) develop the skills (analytical, experimental, computational) necessary for performing an in-depth research study; (iv) communicate the outputs of an in-depth research study clearly, effectively and concisely; (v) manage time and meet deadlines in order to deliver the project aims.

Learning Outcomes

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M4, M6
- Professional/Practical Skills: M9, M13
- Transferable/Key Skills: M17

On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Perform a literature review in order to: develop knowledge and understanding of a topic relevant to civil engineering or construction,
develop an understanding of an appropriate research methodology,
and justify project aims and objectives;

2. Identify, select and apply the appropriate methods for conducting detailed research and process,
present and interpret research methodology outputs*;

3. Draw appropriate conclusions
and critically reflect on the validity and limitations of the conducted research;

4. Communicate clearly, effectively and concisely in a written report:
the literature review and its outputs, the research process, the research methodology outputs and the conclusions.
* Research methodology outputs (RMOs) refers to whatever is generated by performing the research but not the final research outcomes (conclusions). For example, this could be experimental data, output from analysis, survey data, collation of design codes, modelling results, etc.
