Summary
This course (module) offers students the opportunity to undertake an individual investigative project on a topic related to their particular interests. It normally involves a thorough literature review, plus relevant design or data collection and analysis, culminating in the production of a project report of about 5,000-6,000 words.
For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment.
Target Students
Part II BEng students in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Assessment
- 80% Dissertation: 5,000 - 6,000 word final report
- 20% Coursework 1: Mid-term report of progress
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
To: (i) Develop the ability to seek out information on a particular topic via library and Internet searching, personal contact, observation during visits, etc.; (ii) Develop the ability to filter and synthesise such information whilst working to a report preparation specification, with particular regard to length; (iii) Develop the ability to collect and analyse data and/or to produce a design related to the topic investigated; (iv) Develop the student’s time management and organisational skills. This module aims:to develop the ability to seek out information on a particular topic via library and Internet searching, personal contact, observation during visits, etcto develop the ability to filter and synthesise such information whilst working to a report preparation specification, with particular regard to lengthto develop the ability to collect and analyse data and/or to produce a design related to the topic investigatedto develop the student’s time management and organisational skills.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Perform a literature review and demonstrate knowledge of a topic relevant to civil engineering or construction.
2. Develop an understanding of the research methodology selected for the investigation.
3. State clear objectives and meet them through the investigation.
4. Process, present and interpret the Research Methodology Outputs.*
*Research Methodology Outputs (RMOs) refers to whatever is generated by performing the research but not the final research outcomes (conclusions). For example, this could be experimental data, output from analysis, survey data, collation of design codes, modelling results, etc.
5. Draw appropriate conclusions and critically reflect on the validity and limitations of the conducted research.
6. Write a scientific report to communicate the research outcomes clearly, effectively and concisely.
7. Demonstrate time management and organisational skills.
This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1, M2
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M4
- Professional/Practicals Skills: M9, M13
- Transferrable/Key Skills: M17
