Summary

This module will build on skills developed in CHEM1002 so that students:

Target Students

Only available for BSc/MSci Chemistry AND BSc/MSci Medicinal and Biological Chemistry students AND Only available for Level 2 students.

Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of designated period

Educational Aims

This module will build on skills developed in CHEM1002 so that students;• Become increasingly familiar with a range of chemical techniques and apparatus appropriate to the study of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.• Learn how to carry out an assessment of hazards and prepare risk assessments for experiments themselves.• Continue to develop an awareness and appreciation for the safe handling of chemicals.• Continue to develop careful observational skills and an appreciation for the importance of recording experimental data accurately.• Further develop their time management skills.• Continue to develop scientific report writing skills• Become more familiar in consulting the chemical literature, and using library resources to aid compound identification.

Learning Outcomes

Practical laboratory skills, problem solving, time management, written communication skills. Many of the learning outcomes are similar to those for CHEM1002/CHEE1043 but students will be able to function at a much higher level.  Students will:

Be able to perform a range of standard & more advanced synthetic and analytical practical procedures safely and reliably using Good Chemistry Laboratory Practice (GCLP).

Know how to prepare Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and risk assessments.

Be proficient in planning and organising time so that experiments are performed efficiently in the allocated time.

Be competent in calculating amounts of reagents accurately.

Be capable of accurately and precisely measuring reagents and preparing solutions.

Be able to scientifically interpret results and observations and report findings in a concise manner.
