Summary
This module builds on the practical, analytical and communication skills acquired in the first year and introduces more advanced experiments.
Target Students
There are a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
Module commences in Week 3
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Written reports of practical work in Physical Labs
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
This module will build on skills developed in CHEM1020 (or equivalent) so that students:Become increasingly familiar with a range of chemical techniques and apparatus appropriate to the study of physical chemistry.Continue to develop careful observational skills and an appreciation for the importance of recording experimental data accurately.Further develop their time management skills.Continue to develop an awareness and appreciation for the safe handling of chemicals.Become more familiar in consulting the chemical literature and selecting relevant information to complement experimental results in laboratory reports.Learning Outcomes
Practical laboratory skills,
problem solving,
time management,
written communication skills.
Be able to perform a range of practical procedures safely and reliably using Good Chemistry Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
Be proficient in planning and organising time so that experiments are performed efficiently in the allocated time.
Be capable of accurately and precisely measuring reagents and preparing solutions.
Be able to scientifically interpret results and observations and report findings in a concise manner.
