Summary

This module will concentrate on water treatment technologies covering those applicable to both the treatment of wastewater and the treatment of water for potable (drinking water) use. The beginning of the module will introduce the students to water availability, pollution sources and water reuse. The key unit processes in water and wastewater treatment processes will be reviewed, leading on to the design and operation of water treatment processes. Emerging issues in water treatment and the technologies being evaluated to address these issues will be discussed. Site visits, guest speakers from industry, and the use of case studies/example sheets will support the lecture delivery.

Assessment

Educational Aims

To be able to understand and appreciate different steps of wastewater treatment systems and to apply the theory on industrial applications for wastewater treatment processes.

Learning Outcomes

LO1. Understand the current wastewater treatment processes and their limitations and the current available as well as potential emerging technologies.
LO2. Applying the theories and fundamentals of wastewater treatment to solve and design advance water treatment problems.
LO3. Understand the importance of identifying the objectives and context of the design in terms of the business requirements; the technical requirements; sustainable development; safety, health and environmental issues; appreciation of public perception and concerns.
LO4. Design and develop potential solutions for current limitations in water treatment systems in preparation for the ability to perform independent technical design.
