Summary

This module covers aspects of:

  • The formation and location of petroleum hydrocarbon reserves.

  • Drilling and completion engineering including well control techniques.

  • Basic reservoir physics and evaluation.

  • Production management and enhancement.

  • Primary separation.

  • Target Students

Students registered in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering only.

    Classes

45 hours of private study, coursework and exam revision.

    Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

    Educational Aims

The module aims to provide students with a view of current world practice in the location and extraction of oil and gas.

    Learning Outcomes

    A2 Chemical Engineering Principles:

A2.2.6. be able to apply the same underlying principles to more complex problems, critically evaluating the limitations of assumptions of the approach taken.

Taught in relation to petroleum geology, reservoir fluids behaviour and phenomena, and surface production engineering (oil and gas processing). Assessed by exam.

Taught and assessed in relation to various processes and related engineering principles for handling reservoir fluids, such as oil/gas separation, gas dehydration processes, and pipe transportation and storage.

As demonstrated by ability to understand and conduct design calculations for complex enhanced oil and gas recovery, surface processing methods, gas dehydration, and understand their limitations, which will be assessed via exam questions.

A2.4.5. be able to apply their knowledge of chemical engineering principles to complex and/or novel unit operations, process equipment, and substances with complex behaviour.

As evidenced by ability to evaluate process operations and conduct design calculations involving complex, often multiphase, hydrocarbon mixtures, which will be assessed via exam questions.

    A3 Chemical Engineering Practice:

A3.2.13. Have a broad knowledge and critical awareness of developments at the forefront of chemical engineering.

As demonstrated by ability to collate information from lectures and directed reading on EOR, oil and gas processing, as evidenced by ability to answer exam question bringing together information from different sources.

    A5 Embedded Learning:

A5.2.11, Have the ability to familiarize themselves with the new and unknown.

As demonstrated by ability to go beyond lectures and utilise directed reading on new developments to construct arguments. As demonstrated by appreciation of limitations of current technology, and also new developments, through course topics on EOR, unconventional hydrocarbons and their extraction technologies, reservoir fluids processing technologies etc. Assessed by exam.
